But I don't want to....

It appears recently that my to do list is growing, how about yours? I feel like this time of the season my list seems to grow with the nicer weather. And not that everything on my list is something that I want to do. Maybe this is the problem!

There are always going to be things in life that we don't want to do, however, to get to the end result we want we have to get the task completed. You have to think in terms of BOTH long-term and short-term goals. For example: If I put on my walking shoes and go to the park and walk one mile, I will feel better about my self care for the day that I promised myself.

One thing that was not always obvious to me, is that motivation doesn't mean that we have to be excited, happy or thrilled to complete the task. Motivation is more about the WHY behind the task, the long-term goal you are trying to work toward. Maybe that is to lower anxiety, helped a love one, or have better self care.

Maybe you can't see long term results, sometimes I can't either. I start by using certain phrases to help change my thought process when working on things.:

  • I don't want to do _______, but if I do _______ then I will see _____ changes.

  • I don't want to do _______, but I get to do _________ next once the task is completed.

  • I don't have to______, I get to______. (completely my favorite phase!!)

Hope this helps you with gaining some motivation and tackling the week!
